TIAN SHI OPENER 《天时·戊戌志》 纪录片
Commissioned by: Our Artists' work at Vividthree
The cultural documentary 《天时·戊戌志》 is directed by Wu Qi and explores China’s rich heritage through the lens of the twenty-four solar terms. The series reveals thousands of years of Chinese lifestyles and survival wisdom, presenting a philosophy of harmonious coexistence with nature. Adopting a neo humanist perspective, the documentary distills complex knowledge into visually compelling storytelling, highlighting the brilliance and practicality embedded in traditional sustainable agriculture. It celebrates the beauty of Chinese culture, emphasizing the subtlety, balance, and poetic quality of traditional practices.
The documentary pays special attention to eight key solar terms that mark the transitions of yin and yang throughout the year: Lichun, Lixia, Liqiu, Lidong, Chunfen, Qiufen, Xiazhi, and Dongzhi. Historically, these dates were marked with rituals and festivities, reflecting the understanding of the cycles of nature. Winter Solstice, for instance, is considered the moment when yin energy ends and yang begins, symbolizing renewal and the awakening of life.
The opening sequence uses abstract visual forms to represent the four seasons, combining fluid and dynamic elements such as water, ice, sand, and natural motion. Through 3D motion design and subtle animation, the visuals evoke the rhythm and essence of nature, creating an immersive and contemplative introduction that mirrors the documentary’s exploration of traditional wisdom, seasonal cycles, and the harmony between humans and their environment.
